Governance

All hockey activities are overseen and governed by our council and our executive committee. Our council is made up of all our members as well as the executive committee members that the council elects. It meets at least twice per year to, inter alia, elect new executive members and determine the policies of Southern Gauteng Hockey.

Executive committee members are elected for two year terms and take responsibility for the implementation of the policies agreed to by council. (Please remember that these are volunteer roles with most work being done in the evenings and over weekends.) The various roles and the current portfolio holder are detailed further below.

General policies

Constitution

Our foundational document that ensures transparency, accountability, and effective governance within our operations. It spells out our overall goals and provides for rules and procedures, governance structures and dispute resolution mechanisms, and much more.

Executive committee responsibilities
This committee made up of various roles is responsible to the council for the implementation and execution of the policies and decisions of the council. This document explains the responsibilities of the various roles.
Finance
Exists to safeguard assets and ensure good financial management in support of the delivery of strategic goals in a financially sound manner. The policy also clarifies the roles, authority, and responsibilities for essential financial management activities.
Player financing

Designed to provide financial support to players who are unable to fully fund their participation in our senior leagues and inter-provincial tournaments. By offering this support, SGHA seeks to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent deserving players from representing their club and province.

Safety

Provides safety direction and guidelines for clubs to follow and important information to share with players, parents and coaches as to how to create a safe environment for playing hockey.

FIH match rules

FIH Rules of Hockey are available on the FIH website.  The rules cover must-know information for both players and umpires including a quiz feature and videos.

Hockey handbook

Outlines the responsibilities of the association, clubs, players and match officials, to each other. It also explains important conduct offences against which clubs, players and match officials to each other.

Conflict of interest policy

Protects the association’s interests when it is considering taking an action or entering into a transaction that might benefit the private interests of an executive committee member or key person.

Protection of personal information
We are committed to protecting the privacy and personal information of our members, their members and website visitors. This document outlines how we collect, use, store, and protect personal information in compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and other applicable South African laws.
Safeguarding
Safeguarding in sports is about creating a culture and environment where the safety and well-being of children and vulnerable adults is the top priority. It involves proactive measures to prevent harm as well as clear processes to respond to any safeguarding issues that arise. This policy has been developed by the South Afican Hockey Association (SAHA) and we endorse it.
Rules & technical (R&T)

Details the rules and technical policies that umpires and technical officials must follow for full field hockey matches.

Senior club team subsidy policy

Provides targeted financial relief for qualifing senior teams. The policy includes the application form.

High performance (HP) policies

HP selection
Sets out the structure, policies and guidelines for all SG Hockey team selections. The effective functioning of a selection committee is key. All selection committees operate under the sponsorship of the HP executive.
HP official appointment
Provides an objective process by which officials can be selected for the purpose of securing the best possible results. Our HP programmes are player focused, coach led, process orientated and performance driven.
HP player tournament cost

Addresses how player tournament costs are paid in advance prior to their attendance at a regional, national or inter-provincial tournament.
