About us
Our mission is to support, oversee and guide the development of hockey, in all FIH formats in our province. We are responsible for the administration, development, and co-ordination of all activities linked to the game within our province.
Playing or officiating hockey, there are many opportunities and pathways to follow. We have 4 year olds running around small hockey fields, while on the other extreme we have grandparents still running around the hockey field on a weekend. Players and officials have opportunities to participate at the local level, typically via our women’s and men’s club league structures, while we provide pathways to participate in national tournaments and international competitions. There is almost always Southern Gauteng players in our national hockey teams and we regularly see international match officials that have developed their capabilities thanks to our club league structures.
Southern Gauteng comprises 3 Gauteng districts including City of Johannesburg, Sedibeng District municipality and West Rand District municipality. Membership of Southern Gauteng Hockey includes members (typically hockey clubs) and also affiliate members. We even have honorary life members nominated in appreciation of service to hockey in any region within Southern Gauteng.
Hockey in our province is for everyone, from all backgrounds.
Our shared values
While goals and a vision are for the future, values are for now. Values exist, whether we recognize them or not. Our shared values provide collective clarity on what our best behaviour should look like, both on and off the field, applicable to all hockey players, officials and anyone else for that matter standing or sitting on the side of a hockey field.
They can also help us as a hockey province develop an identity that is uniquely ours, that we can all be proud of. Living our shared values, particularly in the tough moments will require some guts, particularly when you see someone else not living up to them.
Our shared values are what we stand for. They are for the sake of our beautiful game.
Respect: We respect our opponents, they make us better. We respect our officials, without them we have no game. Respect works both ways. If I want it, I need to demonstrate it.
Fair play: In the game of life, sportsmanship matters. My team plays hard, but plays fair. We recognise that sportsmanship shows most in the moment when things don’t go our way.
Responsibility: I role model what I expect from others, on and off the field. In the long run, it’s better to do the hard thing, rather than the easy thing.
Together: Inclusion is our game plan. Hockey is for everyone, from all backgrounds. Living in an unequal society, our goal is to create a space where individuals can shine based on their abilities and their efforts.
Governance
All hockey activities are overseen and governed by our council and our executive committee. Our council is made up of all our members as well as the executive committee members that the council elects. It meets at least twice per year to, inter alia, elect new executive members and determine the policies of Southern Gauteng Hockey.
Executive committee members are elected for two year terms and take responsibility for the implementation of the policies agreed to by council. The various roles and the current portfolio holder are detailed further below.
